How to evaluate a private equity firm database before you buy it

Test PE database coverage, source evidence, missing fields and plan access against a real sponsor-research task before subscribing.

To decide whether a private equity firm database is worth subscribing to, test it against one specific sponsor-research task: your target market, the fields needed to qualify firms, the evidence behind those fields and the access your team requires. A firm count or a matching filter alone cannot answer whether the resulting shortlist is defensible.

Start with the decision you need to make

Write down a market, strategy and use case before opening any directory. For example, a sell-side team might need firms that state an interest in a given geography and sector, with historical portfolio evidence to investigate. A placement team may need manager identity and stated strategy but no company relationships. Ask whether the product covers that exact slice and which fields can be inspected there. A broad market label is not a coverage measure.

Use the same check for any vendor, including SeekPrivateEquity:

DecisionWhat to inspectWhat remains unresolved
Can I identify the right entity?Firm name, website and, where relevant, the adviser or fund named in a filing.A manager’s identity does not identify which fund could act.
Can I justify the shortlist?Dated firm statements for strategy, geography, sector, control preference and published deal size.Stated criteria do not establish a current mandate or transaction interest.
Can I use portfolio evidence? The public source, date and nature of a disclosed firm–company relationship.A historical link does not prove present ownership or current appetite.
Can I complete this workflow?Which fields, relationship records, allowances and access methods the plan includes.A plan may fit firm mapping but not portfolio or AI-assisted research.

If any of these answers is critical and the public coverage explanation does not settle it, ask about your exact market and field needs before subscribing.

Check the identity and source behind a record

Do not treat a firm, its adviser and its funds as interchangeable. Start from the firm’s published website and look for the legal or regulated entity when it matters to your task. For a US adviser, the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure guide explains how to inspect its Form ADV. The SEC’s Form ADV bulletin explains that Part 2A brochures describe an adviser’s business practices and investment strategies. For a UK regulated entity, the FCA Financial Services Register records firms that are or have been authorised. These sources help check identity and published statements; their presence alone does not establish a firm’s present PE buying criteria.

For each field you will rely on, ask for the underlying document or page and its date. Check whether the field is stated by the firm, observed in a past transaction, or modelled in a separate guide. A disclosed deal-size range is different from a size inferred from portfolio companies. SeekPrivateEquity keeps source fields as published; where a separate size guide is available, its method and confidence must remain visible. See the firm-versus-fund guide for why entity resolution matters before any strategy filter.

Test one shortlist, then document its gaps

Use a small set of firms your team already knows. Include a clear match, a firm with a broader strategy statement, and a firm whose public information is thin. This is a diagnostic sample for your workflow, not a measurement of the whole database’s coverage or accuracy.

  1. Run the sector, geography, control and deal-size filters that your actual task requires.
  2. Open each candidate’s source and check the statement date and entity. Mark a field as unknown if the source does not support it.
  3. Check any disclosed portfolio relationship against a dated firm page or announcement. Record the relationship as historical unless a current source supports a narrower claim.
  4. Separate “stated fit,” “historical activity,” and “current interest unverified” in the working shortlist. Confirm present interest directly before treating anyone as an outreach candidate.

An absent deal-size field means the reviewed source did not publish a range. It does not mean the firm has no range or falls outside yours. Similarly, an announced fund close is not a measure of capital available today. Do not back-fill dry powder, fund size, ticket size or private contacts with an estimate. The missing-fields guide explains the source boundary in more detail.

Keep a source check you can reuse

Use this blank PE database evaluation sheet to record the result for each candidate in your test shortlist. It has no firm records or example mandates. Make a separate copy for each database you compare, and write the market, strategy and required fields for your task in the research_slice column. Leave a source URL or date empty when you cannot verify it; do not fill it from a different entity’s profile.

For criteria_match_status, use supported, unresolved or conflicting against the dated statement you inspected. Use historical only for a disclosed portfolio relationship unless a later source supports a narrower current-ownership claim. Set current_interest_status to unverified until you have direct, current evidence for the particular opportunity. Those statuses are research notes, not a score or a prediction of response.

After the check, separate the decision into three actions:

  1. Proceed to plan comparison when the required identity and criteria fields have usable sources and the plan includes the records and access your task needs.
  2. Ask a coverage question when a required field, market slice or access term is unresolved. Send the specific gap to contact@seekprivateequity.com.
  3. Keep the firm out of a current-interest list when present appetite is unverified. A useful historical or stated-strategy match can remain in a research shortlist without becoming an outreach claim.

The sheet is a decision log for a selected sample. It cannot establish a product-wide coverage rate or whether any firm is deploying now.

Compare access with the research job

Before purchase, decide whether you need firm-only mapping, a limited portfolio check or regular portfolio-company research. On SeekPrivateEquity, Researcher covers firm profiles without portfolio-company records. Evaluation includes a limited relationship sample. Pro and Enterprise include portfolio-company records and MCP access for compatible clients. The current pricing page renders the approved plan allowances and subscription terms; compare them with the number of new records your task would require. Reopening a viewed record does not consume another view in that allowance period.

MCP can make records easier to retrieve in an AI workflow, but it cannot validate a source or turn a retrieved match into evidence of current appetite. Keep the original source and date in the analyst’s review. The AI data guide covers those checks in more detail.

If your target market, field availability or access terms are still unclear, email contact@seekprivateequity.com with the specific research slice you need checked. Do not infer product-wide coverage from a small evaluation sample.

Frequently asked questions

How can I test a private equity database before subscribing?

Pick a market and strategy from a real research task, check whether the relevant firms and fields are covered, then verify a small set of firm identities, stated criteria and portfolio links against dated public sources. Finally compare the plan's record and access allowances with that task.

Does a matching strategy or portfolio company prove current investment interest?

No. A published strategy describes stated criteria and a portfolio link records historical activity. Neither establishes a current mandate, available capital, present ownership or willingness to consider a particular transaction.

What should I do when a PE database leaves a field blank?

Ask what blank means in that product and which source was checked. For SeekPrivateEquity, a blank source field means the value was not published in the reviewed evidence; it does not mean zero, none or a negative answer.

Which SeekPrivateEquity plan should I assess for portfolio research?

Researcher is for firm profiles without portfolio-company records. Evaluation includes a limited relationship sample; Pro and Enterprise include portfolio-company records, and those two plans support MCP. Check the current pricing page for allowances and access terms.
